Eliminating Self Doubt

Anne Hathaway in her acceptance speech for the Golden Globe Award she won for her role in Les Miserables said;  “Thank you for this blunt object which I will forever use as a weapon against self doubt”.

What a quote!   It just goes to show you that all of us, even the most accomplished, have to battle episodes in which self doubt gets in the way.  Here are some quick tips you can use to handle those moments when self doubt infiltrates your mind and paralyzes your actions.

  • Remember Your Successes – We all have successes we can remember.  While you may not have a Golden Globe, create a memento of each success so when self-doubt appears, you can see the object that will immediately bring to the forefront those memorable moments of when you succeeded.  Remember, if you succeeded once, there is no reason why you cannot succeed again.
  • Concentrate on What You Want to Happen – When self doubt appears, we often worry about what we don’t want to happen.  And then, surprisingly, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.  The only reason it happened is our mind, actions and energy were all geared on what we don’t want to have happen versus what we want to achieve.  Concentrate on what you want to achieve and you will open your mind to the actions necessary to carry out that success.  Concentrating on achieving success releases the energy you need to carry out those actions.
  • Stay in Communication – When in self-doubt, call people who know you, support you and appreciate all you have to offer.  Listen to their reasons on why you will succeed.  Their responses are not negatively impacted by your experiences.  They will have a much better story on why you will succeed than you will.  Whose story would you rather listen to?

No matter how successful you are, there will always be self doubt.  Question is how do you handle the self doubt so you can achieve all of your goals. For more helpful tools, sign up for your FREE subscription to our  Sales & Leadership E-Report.
