What Do You Want to be Known For?

Published on January 2, 2025

What do you want to be known for? As a top sales consultant, I always stress to my clients that the true value and legacy of a person does not start and end with their career. Your legacy story is ongoing until the day you leave this earth, but it must be intentional.
As we start the new year, ask yourself: What do you want to be known for in business and in life? To be truly powerful, your business and personal life should align with one another. A perfect example of this congruence is President Jimmy Carter, who passed away this week at the age of 100.

President Carter served only one term in office, facing significant challenges like the revolution in Iran, which led to dozens of American and international hostages being held against their will. Iran did not release the hostages until President Reagan took office. As a result, Carter was defeated and, at the time, was considered a failed president.
Yet, in office, Carter was known for his human rights advocacy, fighting for democratic values across the globe, and championing energy conservation, renewable energy, and environmental stewardship. He created the Department of Energy, expanded national parks, and, of course, faced the failed Iranian hostage crisis.
Today, however, President Jimmy Carter is celebrated not so much for his presidency but for the 44 years after he left office. It all began with him asking himself: What do I want to be known for post-presidency?
Post-presidency, Carter became known for:
1.Humanitarian Work: Advancing human rights through the Carter Center, including peacemaking efforts that earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.
2.Habitat for Humanity: Helping uplift underserved communities through hands-on service.
Here are two main points to consider:
1.You are more powerful when your business and personal goals and values are congruent.
2.You will build a stronger legacy by being intentional and focused on what you want to be known for.
President Jimmy Carter wanted to be remembered as a moral, principled leader who prioritized ethics over political expediency.
