This Simple Storytelling Trick Will Make People Actually Hear Your Message
Published on February 5, 2025
How do you talk about your successes with clients—or even your own success—without sounding like a self-promoting blowhard? You do it by being vulnerable.
As a top sales keynote speaker, I’m always talking about my clients’ successes—stories of how they achieved something great. But I make sure to position them as the heroes while also highlighting the vulnerabilities they faced. I discuss their fears, the obstacles they encountered, and the challenges they had to overcome—both internally within themselves and externally with others. And in the end, I share the results they achieved by pushing through.
The audience loves it. It’s real, it resonates with their own experiences, and they can see themselves in the story. That’s when you know you have your audience. However, if all you do is brag about success—whether yours or your client’s—without making them the hero, but instead making it all about how great you are, you’ll turn people off.
But what if you are the story? If you came from rags to riches and people want to hear how you did it, do you just talk about how great you are and the results you achieved? The answer is no.
You share your vulnerabilities—the struggles you faced, how you identified the issue, how you overcame it, and what the results were. When you present it in that format, you won’t come across as a self-promoting blowhard but as an authentic individual sharing your journey.
At the end of the day, if you truly want people to connect with your message, you need to tell your story in a way that brings out the authenticity and vulnerability of those involved.
