The Hidden Secret to Exceeding Everyone’s Expectations

Published on September 5, 2025

You know, people always ask me—they want to go faster. And I say, “If you just want to go faster, I can put you in a Ferrari, point you at a brick wall, and tell you to step on it.” That will get you faster results, but not the kind you want. It would be an expensive accident.

But if you really want to go faster and enjoy the results you’re after, you have to do what the City of Portland, Oregon, did—where I’m standing right now. They went with direction. They tore down the waterfront and built brand-new parks for families. They built a north and south freeway around the periphery to move people quickly, but in the center—right here—they created a space where people can walk safely, enjoy culture, and live and work in a thriving environment. They accomplished it.

So, when people say, “I want speed,” I ask: “Where are you really headed?” That’s the difference between speed without direction and speed with direction.

If you’re in the middle of a home renovation or starting a new project, the first question you should ask is: “What’s the direction I’m headed?” Because once you have direction—like Portland did—the speed will take care of itself.

If all you chase is speed, you may not enjoy the results you create. But if you want results you’ll truly enjoy—results that exceed your expectations and those of your customers—you start with direction first. Then, and only then, worry about speed.
