Timing is Everything

I’m standing in Beaver Creek, Colorado, where they’re having an Oktoberfest on Labor Day weekend. Now, why would they have an Oktoberfest on Labor Day? It’s quite simple—it’s all about timing.
The one thing that really screws up velocity is not knowing the exact timing of when to work on something. Without that, you waste a lot of time when you could have come back at the right moment.
So why is Oktoberfest on Labor Day? Well, it’s simple. The harvest starts in September, so it has to happen right before. Plus, here in the Colorado mountains, it could snow in October. That makes Labor Day weekend the perfect timing for Beaver Creek’s Oktoberfest.
Now let’s bring this into business. As a keynote speaker, I’m hired to talk about the Velocity Mindset. When do we go after those conferences to get on the following year’s schedule? We learned – you don’t go after them anytime during the year. The best time is right after the conference you want to speak at has ended—but not immediately. Meeting planners need time to recuperate, reset their vision, and start thinking about the next year.
What we’ve found works best is contacting those meeting planners two months after the conference, then starting the process of getting on the schedule for the following year.
So my question to you is this: Are you wasting time because your timing is off? If so, when should you be coming back—and what else could you be doing right now to further your cause?
