The Secret to Leading Change Without The Title
Published on October 15, 2025
Have you ever thought, “I can’t lead because I don’t have a title?” Here’s the truth: you don’t need a title to lead change. You need influence—and influence is the currency of leadership. The Velocity Mindset® teaches us that velocity is speed with direction. Titles don’t create direction; clarity of purpose and influence do. When you know the outcome you want and communicate it clearly, you can inspire others to move with you—even if you don’t control them.
Early in my career, I was a national value-added reseller manager for Nestar Systems, a local area network company. We sold mostly to distributors. My success depended on their sales reps choosing my products over competitors. But here’s the challenge: I didn’t hire them. I didn’t pay them. I had zero direct authority—yet my results, and my paycheck, depended on their actions.
So how do you gain influence when you can’t pull rank? I realized most distributor reps at the time couldn’t sell their way out of a paper bag, so I asked one distributor manager, “Would you mind if I came in one evening and trained your team?” He said, “How fast can you get here?” That Thursday night I showed up with pizza and taught them sales skills that would help them sell any product on their line card—not just mine.
The result? Their sales shot up across the board, and because they were winning more deals than ever, when it came to my products and services, I was top of mind. They called me first. Why? Because I helped them become successful.
That’s the lesson: you don’t need a title to lead. Think about it. Maybe you’re part of a project team and need cooperation from colleagues who don’t report to you. Or maybe you’re in sales, and your success depends on partners, distributors, or clients taking action. Ask yourself: How can I provide value that helps them succeed? How do I stay top of mind with them? How do I frame the win in support of my direction?
When you do that, you don’t just influence outcomes—you lead change. So next time you catch yourself saying, “I’m not in charge,” remember: leadership isn’t about titles. It’s about influence. Velocity is speed with direction. Your direction is the outcome you want to achieve, and your influence is the lens that makes others see why it’s worth moving with you.
