This Single Hormone Determines Whether Prospects Say “Yes” or Walk Away

Published on October 23, 2025

We all have a fight-or-flight hormone called cortisol. You don’t get rid of it—it’s in you. If you’re trying to influence someone, even before you start talking, the first thing you have to do is create a safe environment that makes them want to engage.

Think about it like this:

0 to 2: Nothing is bothering them, nothing is exciting them—they’re just there, not very engaged.

3 to 5: This is where you want them. They’re actively involved, asking questions like, “When can we do this? When can we start?”

6: Maybe you said something they didn’t agree with, or you’re addressing them at a bad time. They’re not fully listening.

7: They start getting antsy.

8: They start disbelieving you.

9 to 10: They shut you out—either by walking away or not listening at all.

So as a leader, the first thing you must ask yourself before you even speak is: How do I get this person into the 3-to-5 range?

If you are ready to stop guessing and start influencing with confidence, let’s talk.
