Every Word Matters: How Emotional Triggers Shape Success

Published on January 6, 2026

Every conversation you have is shaping a story in someone else’s mind—and if you are not aware of it, that story could be working against you. We are emotional creatures. Like a strength, it can help us—but if it is overused, it becomes a weakness.

Anything you say to me or do to me, all of a sudden I am creating a story about it. What do you mean? How did you say that?

If I am talking to you, I can guarantee that even though we have known each other for a long time and we have similar values in business, I do not know if our values are really the same in our personal lives. We do not have that relationship, right? I really do not understand what makes you tick.

Therefore, I could be using a word that is such an innocent word, and all of a sudden it triggers you because of something you went through in your life. So the point I am trying to make is that we are triggering people—whether we know it or not—just by how we communicate. And if you do not ask questions that help you get closer to where someone wants to go and get on the same wavelength, then you are at a disadvantage.

If you are a high-performing executive who knows your results are driven as much by communication as by strategy, this is your next competitive edge.
