The Leader Who Reminded Us That Everybody Matters
Published on April 6, 2026

On March 20th, Bob Chapman passed away at the age of 86.
A few years ago, I had the privilege of interviewing Bob, CEO of Barry-Wehmiller and author of Everybody Matters.
Bob built a $3 billion global company—but what made him extraordinary wasn’t just the business success.
It was how he viewed leadership.
Bob believed leadership and parenting are fundamentally the same.
Both involve the stewardship of human lives.
Every person who walks into an organization is someone’s son or daughter, a human being who simply wants to know that they matter.
One thing he said during our conversation has stayed with me ever since:
“Our products are our people.”
When leaders truly care for the people in their span of care, something powerful happens.
Performance improves.
Engagement rises.
And people go home knowing their work—and their lives—matter.
Engagement rises.
And people go home knowing their work—and their lives—matter.
Bob also reminded leaders that culture alone isn’t enough.
A strong business model is the engine.
Culture is the premium fuel that allows that engine to perform at its highest level.
Culture is the premium fuel that allows that engine to perform at its highest level.
But his most important lesson may be this:
Leadership isn’t about power.
It’s about responsibility.
It’s about responsibility.
Responsibility for the people whose lives we influence every day.
So here’s a question worth asking:
Do the people in your care know that they matter?
If you lead people, this is not optional viewing.
Watch it. Share it. Live it.
Because the way we lead… matters.
