Why Linear Thinking is Costing You Sales

Published on July 16, 2026

Most salespeople don’t lose deals because of price.

They don’t lose because of the competition.

And they rarely lose because of the economy.

More often than not, they lose because they’re approaching every opportunity with the same linear thinking they’ve been taught since childhood.

From the time we enter school, we’re trained to follow the process. Read left to right. Solve the problem step by step. Show your work. Stay inside the lines.

That approach works in the classroom.

It doesn’t always work in sales.

Customers don’t buy in straight lines. They make decisions based on fears, opportunities, uncertainty, competing priorities, internal politics, and outcomes they want to achieve. If you’re focused only on moving someone through your sales process, you may completely miss what’s actually driving their decision.

The highest-performing sales professionals and leaders don’t simply ask better closing questions.

They ask better thinking questions.

Instead of asking, “What’s my next step?” they ask:

• What assumption am I making?
• What problem am I not seeing?
• What would this look like from a completely different perspective?

That shift changes everything.

When you stop selling products and start solving problems, conversations become easier, trust grows faster, and opportunities appear where others only see obstacles.

That’s what The Velocity Mindset is all about.

Velocity isn’t simply moving faster.

It’s moving in the right direction.
