The Question That Created An Entire Industry

Published on August 13, 2026

Some of the biggest breakthroughs in business don’t begin with a brilliant answer.

They begin with a different question.

I recently came across the story of an industry built around companies purchasing life insurance policies from policyholders.

Traditionally, everyone viewed life insurance through essentially the same lens:

Buy the policy. Pay the premiums. Eventually, the policy pays the beneficiary.

That was the accepted model.

Until somebody asked a different question:

What if some people need the money now more than they need the policy later?

Suddenly, an entirely new opportunity became visible.

What fascinates me is that fundamental nothing has changed.

The policy didn’t change.

The customer didn’t change.

The market didn’t change.

The question changed.

Better Questions Create Different Possibilities

Most people are trained to search for answers.

Velocity leaders learn to search for perspectives.

They ask:

What if?

Why?

Why not?

What are we missing?

What problem exists that nobody is solving?

Those questions matter because opportunities are often hidden inside assumptions nobody has challenged.

Maybe your customers don’t need a better product. Maybe they need more certainty.

Maybe your employees don’t need more accountability. Maybe they need more ownership.

Maybe your prospects don’t need another presentation. Maybe they need greater clarity.

The breakthrough often appears when you stop accepting the problem exactly as it has been presented to you.

Challenge the Assumption

Most organizations don’t suffer from a lack of opportunities.

They suffer from a lack of perspective.

When everyone looks at the same situation through the same lens, everyone tends to see the same possibilities.

Change the lens and suddenly the possibilities change.

That is a fundamental part of the Velocity Mindset.

Velocity isn’t simply about moving faster.

It is about moving with direction—and sometimes finding that direction requires asking a question nobody else has thought to ask.

Before searching for your next answer, challenge yourself and your team:

Are we asking the right question?

Your next breakthrough may depend on it.
