Is There an Easy Path to Success?

Published on August 24, 2023

Does anything in life come easy for us?

Yes and No.

When we engage in activities aligned with our strengths and skills, they often come easily to us. On the other hand, tasks that we dislike or lack proficiency in can be challenging.

However, that is not what I’m talking about here.

Recently, I had a friend get a hold of me. Unfortunately, she fell victim to three separate Craigslist scams in a single day, all attempting to sell various items.

After helping her deal with the situation, I asked what led her down that path. Her response was that she thought it was an easy way to make money. And I said: “Well, there really is no such thing as easy money.”

This exchange made me to reflect on how many professionals, whether salespeople, managers, or agents, constantly seek shortcuts or expect tasks to be simpler than they are. The reality, however, is that success is not easy. It demands extensive effort and unwavering discipline.

This morning I conducted a live webinar on the Velocity Mindset® for a big audience. Some of the people in the audience were unfamiliar with me.

Now I’ve been talking about the Velocity Mindset® for years, both on stage and on webinars. But because I value the participants’ time, I prepared by rehearsing and ensuring all necessary elements were in place. I wanted to make sure that those who committed their time received the value they sought.

I could’ve easily just shown up and still do my presentation, because I know the material really well. After all, I created it. But that would not be honoring the people who I serve.

So if you are a salesperson, for example, it’s not just about showing up for a call or customer meeting. It is about pausing before the meeting to define your objectives, considering your questions and actions, and even rehearsing relevant skills. This groundwork ensures you’re at your best during the interaction.

Even if you’ve done this a hundred thousand times before, maintaining this level of commitment is vital, because at the very least it puts you into the right mindset for the call.

So if you are looking for something easy, go buy a lottery ticket. In fact, even that is not really easy, because you still have to have the discipline and keep doing it, hoping to one day win.

You can’t win the game if you are not in it. And you can’t win the game if you don’t do the work needed to succeed. So please don’t look for the easy way out. Instead, ask yourself: “What does it take for me to get to the top of the mountain that I am trying to reach?”
